Car Scent Air Freshener Nearly Killed A Man?

News of an exploding car scent air freshener went viral recently. What’s worse is that it nearly killed a man inside the car and damaged the vehicle leaving its passenger door hanging on its hinges and the windscreen flying 75ft away.

It has been reported several times that aerosols are dangerous since they are flammable and can suddenly explode. But how true is this for all kinds of air fresheners? How about your bling car air freshener diffusers and essential oils?

Exploding Air Freshener

It was known that a man in his 20s, known as Joe, sprayed a can of air freshener in his car moments before he lit a cigarette. The can of aerosol plus a naked flame was a recipe for disaster. The flame from Joe’s lighter came in contact with the vaporized air freshener causing the can to explode. Fortunately for Joe, he walked away from this disaster with only minor burns on his head, arms and legs.

So, are air fresheners really flammable?

According to Robert Tisserand, an aromatherapy expert, vaporized essential oil in the air is not a fire risk. However, he said that if you ever managed to vaporize a few kilos of essential oil in a small room and lit a flame, then you would probably have your fire going. But then you’d suffocated before that happens.

Burners or vaporizers, such as the aerosol can air freshener, is a different matter. These have been known to spontaneously catch fire and are definitely a fire hazard.
