Learn to use essential oils the right way

There are essential oils in the market that can cause sensitization, which are commonly thought to be allergic reactions. Sometimes, even essential oils that are marketed to be the safest can trigger sensitivity problems. Personally, I do not know anyone who is sensitive to essential oils. Nonetheless, there are questions sent to us regarding product safety, especially from those who have experienced allergic reactions in the past.

While most oils are derived from flowers or plants, they are usually harmless especially when used properly. Diluting with carrier oils, for example, is a common practice in aromatherapy to make the essential oil less potent. For aromatherapy beginners, it is advised to learn how to dilute your oils the right, particularly if you plan skin application.

What is Sensitization or an Allergic Reaction?
Sensitization happens when the body develops specific antibodies causing allergic reactions. Sensitization can vary greatly from one person to another, though most of the time; it results in a severe skin rash. Once you develop sensitivity to certain oil, it is likely that you will be sensitized to it permanently, even when the oil is adequately diluted.

The Dosage

The dosage is one of the most important things that you should take note of when using aromatherapy. Essential oils that are too concentrated will not only ruin your diffuser; it can also cause damage to the skin or other parts of the body.

Application Method

There are oils that are safe to use on your essential oil diffuser, but can cause irritation when applied to the skin (even when diluted). Examples of these oils are thyme, oregano and cinnamon bark. Citrus-based oils like bergamot, lime, and lemon may cause photo toxicity because of the nature of how it is made. Know more about citrus oils and why you must handle them with care.
To avoid problems, ensure that you read recommended applications for each kind of essential oil. Never ingest oils without proper guidance.

Learn About Oil Purity

In my past posts, I shared about the purity of essential oils and how it can affect the potency of your aromatherapy. Make sure you understand why essential oil purity is important to avoid potential health problems along the way.

Like in any health related activities, safety should be your utmost concern. When using essential oils; make sure to be always on the safe side. Treat all essential oils with respect by researching it before you start aromatherapy.
