bpafreesmileydaisyWhat is BPA?

BPA is also known as Bisphenol A, it is an industrial chemical that is used as a material for manufacturing certain plastics and resins. BPA is a major ingredient in creating plastics since the 1960s. BPA is used in many consumer goods like baby bottles, sealants, dental/medical devices, household items, and many others. The presence of BPA in consumer products has been drawing concern from the health sector because of its possible harmful effects.

Take note that not every plastic is guilty of BPA leaks. It is important to know what kinds of plastics are more likely to leak BPA, and what plastics are safe for use.

Why Worry About BPA?

Bisphenol A is a known endocrine disruptor, which means it can interfere with the production, transport, and function of natural hormones in the body. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 95% of adults and 93% of children are found to be exposed to BPA, a major health concern for many health advocates.

BPA is known to give adverse side effects like heart diseases, loss of brain function, reduced memory, increased risk of developing breast cancer, and increased chances of asthma attacks.

Smiley Daisy Product Components – BPA Free

The upper part of Smiley Daisy diffuser is made entirely of polypropylene (PP) one of the strongest plastics. It is considered an important plastic because of its properties like strength, temperature resistance, and flexibility. Polypropylene is also safe due to its flame retardant properties.

Polypropylene plastics are used for food items like ice cream tubs, yogurt containers, syrup bottles, ketchup bottles, and drinking straws. PP is known as one of the safer plastics compared to highly unstable ones like polycarbonate, nylon, and polystyrene. With proper use, items made of polypropylene are stable and will least likely to leak harmful chemicals.

The lower part of the diffuser is made of Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS). ABS is a common and safe thermoplastic used for many products like musical instruments, medical devices for blood access, small kitchen appliances, and toys (including Lego bricks).

Using Plastics the Right Way

To keep plastic products from leaking BPA, it is necessary to become familiar with the different kinds of plastics. Get to know which products are safe for use and recycling. Avoid heating plastics or placing your product in storage with high temperature. Lastly, purchase only from trustworthy sellers to ensure that you get quality products.
