Spending the Holiday Season with Essential Oils

Since the holidays are coming and everybody is getting ready for the cold weather, now is the time to diffuse and blend essential oil inside our homes.

To get into the season’s spirit and to achieve a warming ambiance, there are several essential oils that are suitable for use during the “burr” months (and the winter solstice that will leave you feeling cold until the new year).

Usually, the type of essential oils that are useful during the winter months are those that are known for their warm, resinous, spicy and woody aroma. But, any essential oil of your liking could also work.

Essential oils like clove bud, ginger and cinnamon are quite strong and effective for warming purposes. But you have to be extra careful with the amount that you put into your diffuser because they can highly irritate the mucous membranes inside your nose. It’s a good idea to blend these stronger scents with a gentler scent like sweet orange essential oil.  It’s like when you throw orange peels into your fire place or pit to get that great orange scent mixed with the outdoors and smell of burning wood.

For Christmas, there are also a different group of essential oils you can use specifically to bring in the holiday spirit. Coniferous oils like scotch pine and fir needle; resinous oils like myrrh and frankincense; minty oils like spearmint and peppermint; woody oils like cedar-wood; and spicy oils like nutmeg and cinnamon.  These scents will all bring the magic of the holiday season right into your home.

The holiday season is not only a time for joy and gift giving, it is also a time for runny noses, colds, flu and dry, chapped skin. During this time the use of essential oils can really aid in your relief of pesky symptoms trying to ruin your joy. Try using your cool mist essential oil diffuser and finding a soothing combination that will keep you relaxed and soothed and those cold symptoms at bay.  Combinations of peppermint, lavender, rosemary or juniper oil inside your home and bedroom can really make a difference in your environment. Tea tree and ravensara essential oils could also keep you healthy during the winter months because of their antibacterial/ anti-viral properties. You can use tea tree as a hand sanitizer too by mixing it with an unscented carrier oil or lotion.

All of these tips can really help bring you through the holiday season with plenty of comfort and joy.
